Born in Pozzolengo, Italy, he originally studied law in Milan before changing his focus to art and photography. Mostly self-taught, Mulas began by photographing the outskirts of the city and his friends during nights out. His style was off-the-cuff and casual, which would remain a hallmark of his work.
